Navkar or Namokara mantra Jainism words Namo Arihantanam in English

The namokara mantra or navkar mantra is the most significant mantra in Jainism. It is often the first prayer to be recited but can be said at any time. It worships the virtues of the Thirthankaras rather than any individual.


Namo Arihantanam

I bow down to the preaching of Arihantas (souls that have reached a state of non-attachment)

Namo Siddhanam

I bow down to the preaching of Siddhas (souls that have reached liberation)

Namo Ayariyanam

I bow down to the lessons of Acharyas (teachers/head of Sadhus and Sadhvis)

Namo Uvajjhayanam

I bow down to the teachings of Upadhyayas (those who teach scriptures to sadhus and sadhvis)

Namo Loe Savva Sahunam

I bow down to Sadhus (monks, who have voluntarily given up social, economical and family relationships)

Eso Pancha Namokkaro

These five salutations

Savva Pavappanasano

Destroy all sins

Mangalanam Cha Savvesim

Amongst all that is auspicious

Padhamam Havai Mangalam

Is the most auspicious one
