Traditionally Rangolis were used to welcome guests, before any guest arrives we always clean the home and so in this same way before welcoming Goddess Lakshmi into our homes at Diwali time we clean the home and create beautiful Rangoli patterns to welcome her. The design patterns often consist of natural elements like animals, flowers, etc.
The lotus design can be used to welcome Goddess Lakshmi on Dhanteras and you can switch it over to the diva for Diwali day itself :) It is also thought that through the symmetrical pattern it is pleasing to the eye and brings good luck to the home.
